1 Kings 15:1-3
In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam the son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah.
Abijam reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Maachah the granddaughter of Abishalom.
And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David.
Abijam only reigned three years. Therefore, GOD did not bless his reign.
Abijam knew something of the Lord, but did no more towards the Lord’s kingdom. 1 Kings 15:3 says that “he walked in all the sins of his father.”
Abijam lacked a relationship with GOD. His father - King David - sinned, but kept his relationship with the Lord and relied on the Lord.
Abijam is a classic example of a successful failure. Abijam climbed the ladder of success, reached the top, and realized that being a grand king was not more important than his relationship with GOD. People like Abijam are becoming more and more common; reaching for earthly success before reaching for the love of GOD.
I thank GOD for the grace and mercy He has for His children.
Glory be to God!
